Resilience Building Course for Children
The course will be given by Laura Murtagh, Educational Psychologist and Primary Teacher.
This is a 10 session programme run over 5-weeks (2 days per week, Tuesday evening and Saturday morning) and it aims to assist children build resilience and self-esteem and to learn important skills and techniques to cope with feelings of fear, worry and unhappiness through the use of fun and interactive activities.
The course will take place on two days each week.
Tuesdays at 4.30pm – 5.30pm for 8-10 year-olds and from 5.30pm to 6.30pm for 11-13 year-olds.
Saturdays at 10am – 11am for 8-10 year-olds and from 11am to 12 midday for 11-13 year-olds.
Booking is essential as places are limited to a maximum of 10 per group. The course is €120 per child (€20 deposit required to secure a place.).
It will start on Tuesday 14th May 2019 and the venue is Swinford Cultural Centre.
Rationale for the Course
We are hearing more and more about the benefits of resilience for our emotional well-being. Resilience is generally referred to as the ability to overcome adversity; achieving positive outcomes regardless of life events or circumstance. Stress and worry are part of life and, unfortunately, we do not always have control over stressful life events. Therefore, it is important that we do as much as we can to increase our resilience. Research has shown that while our genetics play a part in our levels of resilience as well as life circumstances, there is also a lot we can do and learn to build resilience and offset the potential for negative outcomes. Teaching these skills to children empowers them to cope with life’s challenges early on, which in turn leads to a greater sense of self-efficacy as they develop.
This course is based on the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Theory and it will be delivered through the use of fun and interactive activities such as group discussion, role play, group tasks, cooperative games, drawing, art, individual reflective exercises and meditation.

Parents/guardians will be provided with information each week on what has been covered in each class to enable them to discuss the content with their children and help them put the skills into practice in their everyday lives.
